Person's of Note - Alfred Jarry

  • French eccentric writer and dramatist, said to be the forerunner to dadaism, futurism and surrealism movements.
  • Wrote many absurd plays, novels, essays and poetry, supposedly pioneering postmodernist philosophies and absurdist literature.
  • Invented concept of Pataphysics, a branch of science and philosophy that deals with the imaginary and non-sensical concepts. It has no real definition and was based off a high school science teacher Jarry and his classmates would ridicule, asking unanswerable questions just to watch him make something up on the spot that sounded scientific.
  • This teacher inspired and became embodied as Jarry's later character 'Ubu Roi', a monstrous, obese and savage character who represents everything bad with the world. He wrote a play of the same name, which massively shocked the avant garde audience, the play being nothing French Theatre had ever previously seen and was uniquely absurd for it's time.
  • After the play was first shown, he gained notoriety and quickly personified Ubu Roi, adopting his speaking style and ridiculous figure of speeches.
  • He had a fascination and obsession with alcohol, more specifically hard liquors and absinthe. He also had a similar love for his bike, being an avid cyclist.
  • He was known to carry a revolver, which Picasso later owned and was said to carry around after Jarry's death, and would enjoy pulling it on dinner guests.
I have chosen Alfred Jarry as my person of note. He is arguably the biggest personality of the three and by far the most eccentric and outlandish, even topping Turing's scientific fascinations. There appears to be lots of visual motifs and symbolical elements that I can try and work with and incorporate into my response also, such as his revolver, his bike, Ubu Roi, the idea of pataphysics and alcohol, to name a few.
There is also a style there to work with and one that will push my previous ways of working. Avant Garde, surrealism and dadaism can all influence the visuals I create and will push me into new techniques and styles.
