Persons of Note - Collage Experiments

I am really happy with a number of these little collage experiments, made whilst I was trying to find more out about Jarry.

I was attempting to create a weird sense of reality, a subtle distortion by a simple way of combining duplicated images together with a change in position or scale. A lot of what Jarry seems to concern himself with through his work is alternative versions of reality, where things are interrelated, yet also very paradoxical and juxtaposed.

I am a fan of some of these, particularly the right hand page in the top image, and the top collage in the bottom image. I like the subtly of them, the way the images look almost right yet there is still something 'off' about them, still something that demands you to look again and work out what is going on. It's this normality and slight absurdity that I feel reflects Jarry's work. Although it is by all means totally outlandish and surreal, there are bits of his writings that make sense and that can be followed and read as though they were comprehensible fiction, but it doesn't take long before you are once again thrown into the avant garde maze that is Jarry's mind.

Above all else though, these were VERY freeing and enjoyable to make, throwing together multiples of the same image and finding little ways to twist what the images are representing through these slight altercations.
