Persons of Note - Questions on Collage and Process...

On writing my last blog post, I have wondered what it is that makes collage so fun and freeing to me?; more specifically the previous collage experiments in response to this brief, as opposed to collage as a whole, which I more often than not still struggle with.

I don't know if it's something about the simplicity of them, the ease of the process and the lack of complicated and 'conscious' image making. Everything is already there, the two images sat next to each other, and it's your job simply to combine the two in an interesting and visual way that makes sense to the intent (one which was inherently loose and free to begin with anyway). And to do this, you don't even need to be thinking too deeply or wrestling with any challenging decisions. There is a primal and instinctive 'knowing' in what works and what doesn't, which becomes apparent before you reach for the glue, therefore once you have cut out the elements the images are almost already made. There has to be a mention of the meditative nature of actually cutting out the images with a knife, something which is equally as satisfying as it is relaxing, but I do think it goes beyond the actual physical technique which makes it so enjoyable.
